The 2011 Tohoku earthquake tsunami (the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake), which struck off the Pacific coast of eastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The earthquake recorded a moment magnitude of 9.0 with an extensive tsunami disaster area measuring 200km east to west and 500km north to south.
Academic advances with respect to tsunami are truly progressing at a rapid rate after 2011. New research results have been provided and the remarkable progress made in the numerical analysis technology for predicting tsunami impact. We have been able to conduct detailed analyses of the conditions of this tsunami to verify our previous knowledge, and we have also been able to raise the academic level of tsunami evaluation. These results have been compiled here in this publication “Tsunami Assessment Methods for Nuclear Power Plants in Japan: 2016”. This is a technical reference book that summarizes the elemental technologies related to the tsunami evaluation.
